I moved into an apartment in East Los Angeles, an area predominantly Asian. The apartment was above a detached garage in a residential area. The young Asian woman had rented the place to me for a reasonable fee, and it was fully furnished. I liked it very much, and it was very close to my new job.

She had a daughter, a lovely young woman named Annie. They were recent immigrants to this country, and didn’t speak English very well.

Right outside the balcony of my apartment, Annie and her friends had built a tree house.
