By lunchtime, Pete was up and about, bored stupid by the process of assisting Granny as she decided to reorganize the kitchen. School began to assume the position of a desirable activity in his mind – if he had to scrub just one more perfectly clean pan he was going out of his skull.

 

At school, Mary made discreet inquiries about the prevalence of enemas amongst her friends.

 

“Say, girls, guess what. My cousin called me – he’s been ill, and he had to have an enema!”
